A Tribute to Roy Smith
A Tribute to Roy R. “Blue Eyes/ Pop/ Pappy” Smith
Life: May 16, 1919 - October 11, 2007
Roy was born and raised in eastern PA and lived his whole life in Kunkletown. He was the son of Asher and Bertha Kuehner Smith. Roy was a pioneer in dirt and asphalt racing at many tracks including Dorney Park, Hatfield, Old Bridge, Saratoga, Nazareth, Middletown, NY, Evergreen, Reading, and Langhorne.
He won many championships with the famous #555 with Freddy Adams, Warren Mutter, and Marty Acker, and won many races with George Sleight, Billy Tanzosh, Bobby Bottcher, Larry Voss, Freddy Fehr, and Johnny Caprill. He also helped build cars for two of his sons – Richie who piloted the famous “Triple Nickel” and Randy in the “Double Nickel”. He also helped his grandson Joel in the “Triple Nickel”.
The Pop Smith racing legacy continues with grandsons and granddaughter, Ryan, Brett, and Shannon – the 2007 Kutztown slingshot champion.
88 years of pure sweetness, a great man, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, has “Gone Home”. But every Green & Checkered flag waived from here to Eternity will be watched and smiled upon by Pop Smith!
Roy is survived by his wife of 65 years Evelyn and their six children, spouses, 21 grand children, and 21 great grand children.
Roy will be deeply missed and may he race in peace!

Hamlin Preps For 2008 Season
News out of the S&S Speedways offices have confirmed the opening of Hamlin Speedway in 2008 by Randy & Denise Smith. The paperclip shaped 1/5 mi. clay oval saw an increase of over 12 Slingshots in their Regular,Junior & Super classes.A nice payout and some high paying special events have given Hamlin an average car count of 26 regulars for 2007 and the prospect of growing even more. The Sat. night gathering of racers will see Speedweeks make another stop at Hamlin and an early tentative schedule will have them hosting a National Tour event in early Sept.Hamlin will crown their point champs and give out the much deserved special awards at their Nov. 10th banquet. For more info please check out www.hamlinspeedway.com
Borgers to Host Roy Smith Memorial National,JR. National & Mid-Atlantic on Oct. 20th
Smith,Raidline & Heckman have made some adjustments to the purse structure and are using Time Trials as part of their qualifying for the Oct. 20th National. The race is being run as the The Roy Smith Memorial and will pay the winner $555.00.The Juniors will have their last chance to better their point standings with many Juniors never seeing Borgers planning on giving the tough 1/7th mile a shot. The Juniors must be between ages 8-13 and for some 14 years old, providing they started the season as a 13yr. old.The Juniors must be equipped with a 1 barrel carb and meet the 685 lb. weight limit minimum.Gates will open at 1:30 with hot laps beginning at 5 PM.
The National and Mid-Atlantic points are very close and with only the top 4 National Point races ,every spot will determine a lot of the final outcomes.
This will conclude the Touring season in the northeast, but a trip to Alabama for the final National Points event of the season could actually determine the 2007 National Champion. With weekly hometrack points now concluded, the Regional and National points still have yet to be decided.
Talladega Short Track to End National Tour
Keep the weekend of Oct 26-27th open as the Slingshot by Tobias National Tour will invade the Talladega Short Track as part of their Fall Jamboree. The 1/3rd mile high banked clay oval can host 5 big cars wide on the huge racing surface so there will plenty of racing room for the Slingshots that weekend. We will be part of a weekend of speed including all types of racing and a fan attendance that will be estimated in the thousands.Camping will be available and as part of this National offering tickets to the Talladega Racing Museum and Hall of Famequite possibly could be given to race teams when they sign-in.There is a 1/6th mile kart track but the Slingshots will be on the full blown 1/3 mi.Check out their website at www.talladegashorttrack.com.Race organizers Lynn Phillips and Alfred Gurley will be willing to answer any requests for other info.
Talladega Short Track Gives Approval for Tow Money!
Gulf Coast dealers Larry Spencer and Keith Achenbach have been working day and night to make sure the trip to the Talladega Short Track on Oct. 26th & 27th will be a major success."Preacher",the TST promoter is hoping to see as many "Northern" invaders as possible. He has given his approval of a 2 night complete payout show with no entry fee (as of Aug. 24th).Use of camping facilities is a go.A proposed working agreement with the Talladega Super Speedway for track, museum and Hall of Fame tours will be known shortly. The recent end of the season trips to Alabama have generated added fan interest at Wilson's and we hope to show the estimated 2,000-4,000 fans that the Slingshots have a place in this type of racing environment.TST is about 2 hours closer than Wilson's,rooms are available in the immediate area right now.
