A Tribute to Roy R. “Blue Eyes/ Pop/ Pappy” Smith
Life: May 16, 1919 - October 11, 2007
Roy was born and raised in eastern PA and lived his whole life in Kunkletown. He was the son of Asher and Bertha Kuehner Smith. Roy was a pioneer in dirt and asphalt racing at many tracks including Dorney Park, Hatfield, Old Bridge, Saratoga, Nazareth, Middletown, NY, Evergreen, Reading, and Langhorne.
He won many championships with the famous #555 with Freddy Adams, Warren Mutter, and Marty Acker, and won many races with George Sleight, Billy Tanzosh, Bobby Bottcher, Larry Voss, Freddy Fehr, and Johnny Caprill. He also helped build cars for two of his sons – Richie who piloted the famous “Triple Nickel” and Randy in the “Double Nickel”. He also helped his grandson Joel in the “Triple Nickel”.
The Pop Smith racing legacy continues with grandsons and granddaughter, Ryan, Brett, and Shannon – the 2007 Kutztown slingshot champion.
88 years of pure sweetness, a great man, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, has “Gone Home”. But every Green & Checkered flag waived from here to Eternity will be watched and smiled upon by Pop Smith!
Roy is survived by his wife of 65 years Evelyn and their six children, spouses, 21 grand children, and 21 great grand children.
Roy will be deeply missed and may he race in peace!
