Wyalusing Raceway
A problem with the renewal of the old domain (wyalusingvalleymp.com) resulted in the site going down, along with the loss of all of the files for the old site.
The new site has been created and features a bolder, brighter appearance along with much easier navigation.
The new domain is wvmpracing.com. We are working to resolve the issues with the old domain, which will eventually be pointed at the new site as well.
The excitment toward the 2008 season is beginning to build. The new variable banking on the track and the three new sportsman divisions are generating a good bit of interest.
The SportsWOMAN division is getting the most attention. Many racer's wives, girlfriends, or daughters would love to try racing, but are not comfortable racing against the men. This division will feature women only in a very affordable class.
Just as appealing is the fact that the SAME kart can be raced by a man and a youngster on the SAME DAY, making it very economical for the whole family to enjoy the thrill of racing without the investment of multiple cars.
If you've been wanting to try your hand at driving, or you're looking for something afforable to get your competitive speed fix, stop on by the new site and see what Wyalusing Valley Motorsports Park has to offer!

With a little over 2 months after the Atlantic City race, until the 2008 race season begins it may be time to schedule a day to have your new bodies and trailers lettered.
We realize most teams plan on running the indoor races and wish to hold off on the installation of your new bodies until after AC.
We are offering a discounted rate for slingshots as well as multi car rates that are scheduled between December 14, 2007 and January 1, 2008. These discounted rates will be honored after the scheduled indoor races as long as they are scheduled between the dates listed above.

Hamlin 2007 - Regulars Slingshots - Trip down Memory Lane! Wks 1,2,3
Hamlin Speedway 2007 - Weeks 1,2, & 3 revisited!
Draft and review by Denise L Smith
Weeks 1 and 2 allowed the #357 of Marc .Iceman. Daniels to bag 2 quick victories against the best slingshot competition in the Northeast! Daniels came out of the box lean and mean! Beginning to materialize was the top point runners, the crème rising to the top, of the #23b of Billy VanInwegen Jr. - the 2006-track champion, the #42 of 'Nitro' Nick Pecko - the 2006 National slingshot champion who wins week #3 and eventually becomes one of the top 3 contenders for the season title! Nowhere in site of the top 5 is
the #23 of Shannon Smith who eventually climbs her way up in points by seasons end. Early season top runner of the #1 Billy Weaver shows savvy with 3 top 5s in 3 weeks but falls absent mid-season. Also take notice of the part time competitors of Ryan Smith and Steven Intravaia who are national champions and visiting Hamlin for limited events. Also . another driver missing from the top ten, 2 of 3 weeks, is the #555 of Dale Kober but 2 rookies in the Regular slingshot division make the top 10 - #55r Ryan Wood, the 2006 . Junior track champion and #23c of Billy Clark, coming out of the go-kart ranks! Note the consistency of #14t Jeff Cosgrove . finishing 7th each week. And finally . a major kudos to Mr. V for the outstanding sportsmanship and camaraderie demonstrated (Mr. V comments in week #3) when your feature win was snatched away by the 2006 National Champion on the white flag lap!
And it's just the beginning of a fantastic season! Enjoy!
As each chapter comes together . I am asking for input from the top 5 feature finishers. I received input from the 'Iceman' and from 'Broadway' Bill! Please provide input if possible!
--------------------
Week#1 - April 21st: Bringing back the 270cc Micro Sprints in conjunction with the always-exciting Slingshots made the Hamlin Speedway season opener a brilliant success!
The Regular Slingshots brought a field of 29 cars to battle for the first checkered of 2007! It was a chilly spring day that allowed the .Iceman. to prove his ways! The #357 of Marc Daniels piloted his slingshot to
win the 25-lap feature and the first checkers of 2007! Marc started 5th and worked his way to the lead by
lap 10, never to be challenged. Coming from the 8th starting spot to bring home second was the defending
2006 Hamlin Speedway champion #23b Billy VanInwegen Jr., the #42 of .Nitro. Nick Pecko weathered
the challenge of the #551 of Ryan Smith to finish 3rd and Smith 4th. Recovering from an early spin the #1
of Billy Weaver came home in 5th. The heat winners were #14t Jeff Cosgrove, #10 Mark Gilmore, & #42
Nick Pecko. The B-Main winner was the #40 Rich Curtis.
Week #1 . Feature Finish:
1st: #357 Marc Daniels, 2nd: #23b Billy VanInwegen Jr., 3rd: #42 Nick Pecko, 4th: #551 Ryan Smith, 5th-#1 Bill Weaver, 6th-#1r Kyle Rohner, 7th-#14t Jeff Cosgrove, 8th-#555 Dale Kober, 9th-#55r Ryan Wood, 10th-#23c Billy Clark, 11th-#23 Shannon Smith, 12th-#14 Joey Funk III, 13th-#10 Mark Gilmore, 14th-#40 Rich Curtis, 15th-#04 Bill VanInwegen, 16th: #33y Steve Yankowski, 17th: #36 Kenny Schnatter, 18th: #64x Paul Lotier, 19th: #38 Mike Dougherty, 20th: #41 John Critelli, 21st: #12 Adam Brown, 22nd: #89 Peter Patchoski, 23rd: #51j Jake Smith, 24th: #54 Joe Malson
Victory circle interview - #357 Daniels: It was awesome to win the season opener against the best drivers
in this division! To start the season with 2 wins . Linda.s & Hamlin . WOW! If anyone had told me going
into the season that I was going to win the first 2 races I would compete in, against full fields I would have
told you, your nuts! Track was tacky and perfect. To get a win at Hamlin means a lot to me. Hopefully
we can do it again next week.

Jim Young Photo #1: Regular Slingshot Feature
Winner Weeks 1 & 2 - #357 Marc Daniels!

Jim Young Photo #2: #14t of Jeff Cosgrove leading the #55 of Ryan Smith & #1R of Kyle Rohner! #14t Cosgrove was .Mr. Consistency. with 3- 7th place finishes in all 3 weeks!

Week #2: April 28, 2007 . As much as the weather was threatening the racing was even better! The hit and miss raindrops made the track conditions a perfect night for dirt track racing!
A strong field of 26 Regular slingshots came to battle on a rainy, chilly night in April! But again . the 'Iceman' Marc Daniels dominated from the outside pole to the lead by lap 10 with a rain-shortened feature of 16 laps. The #357 of Daniels went to Victory Circle winning his 3rd in a row! Bringing home a well-earned 2nd place was the #1 Billy .the Dream. Weaver, with the 3rd spot going to the #23 of Billy V Jr, 4th to the #41 John Critelli, and 5th to #42 Nick Pecko. .Nitro. Nick Pecko earned the Hard-Charger award coming from the 17th starting position! The heat winners were the #1R of Kyle Rohner, #357 of Marc Daniels, and #555 of Dale Kober.
Week #2 . Feature Finish:
1st: #357 Marc Daniels, 2nd: #1 Billy Weaver, 3rd: #23b Billy VanInwegen, 4th: #41 John Critelli, 5th: #42 Nick Pecko, 6th: #18a Jake Smith, 7th: #14t Jeff Cosgrove, 8th: #36 Kenny Schnatter, 9th: #551 Simon Egan, 10th: #97 Gary Berkenstock, 11th: #14 Joey Funk III, 12th: #33Y Steve Yankowski, 13th: #1R Kyle Rohner, 14th: #38 Mike Dougherty, 15th: #23 Shannon Smith, 16th: #23c Bill Clark, 17th: #55r Ryan Wood, 18th: #555 Dale Kober, 19th: #20 Kevin VanValkenburg, 20th: #89 Peter Patchoski, 21st: #40 Rich Curtis, 22nd: #920 Chad Winowich, 23rd: #10 Mark Gilmore, 24th: #04 Bill VanInwegen Sr., 25th: #32 Steven VanValkenburg, 26th: #88d Darryl Deemer
Victory circle interview - #357 Daniels: Wow! This is awesome. Would have never believed that I was going to win 4 races in a row, in 2 weeks, Linda.s and Hamlin! Unbelievable! Which track should I go for the championship title at? It.s still early, and it.s going to be a lot of work, but as long as I keep running like this and winning maybe I.ll be running both tracks for the titles.
---------------------
Week #3: May 5, 2007 . A chilly spring night produces some hot racing at Hamlin Speedway! With a total slingshot count of 63 cars . the night was bound to be a blast!
With a total of 31 Regular slingshots in competition . the 2006 National Slingshot Champion and Hamlin
regular . the #42 of .Nitro. Nick Pecko took advantage of a yellow flag, a caution thrown for a disabled
car . to capture the win!
With a solid lead - the #04 of Bill VanInwegen Sr. was forced to slow for a caution for the #57 of Luke Schostkewitz as he slowed on the speedway. In the meantime, coming from the 14th starting position . the
#42 of 'Nitro' Nick Pecko lined up in the 2nd position, with only a green-white-checkered flag to finish,
poised to challenge the #04 of Bill V Sr, the race leader for the win! On the restart . Pecko closed the gap, made a perfect pass, and took the lead on the white flag lap over .Broadway. Bill V Sr! .Nitro. took the checkered to victory circle and earned the Hard Charger Award for the second straight week! The #04 .Broadway. Bill VanInwegen Sr. brought home 2nd, with the #1 of Billy .the Dream. Weaver in 3rd,
the #21 of Steven Intravaia 4th, and the #357 the .Iceman. Marc Daniels in 5th. The heat winners were the
#33y of Steve Yankowski, #04 Bill V Sr., and the #1 of Billy Weaver. The B-Main event was won by the
#14 of Joey Funk III.
Week #3 - Feature Finish:
1st: #42 Nick Pecko, 2nd: #04 Bill VanInwegen, 3rd: #1 Bill Weaver, 4th: #21 Steve Intravaia, 5th: #357 Marc Daniels, 6th: #23b Billy VanInwegen, 7th: #14t Jeff Cosgrove, 8th: #14 Joey Funk III , 9/10th: #551 Simon Egan, 9/10th: #1r Kyle Rohner, 11th: #38 Mike Dougherty, 12th: #21a Anthony Perrego, 13th: #555 Dale Kober, 14th: #55r Ryan Wood, 15th: #40 Rich Curtis, 16th: #33y Steve Yankowski, 17th: #20 Kevin VanValkenburg, 18th: #57 Luke Schostkewitz, 19th: #54 Joe Malson, 20th: #780 Rich Sanford, 21st: #23 Shannon Smith, 22nd: #12 Adam Brown, 23rd: #23c Billy Clark, 24th: #18a Jake Smith
------------------------------------------
From #04 .Broadway. Bill V Sr - 2nd place finisher:
I remember leading the race and seeing the #57 of "Leadfoot Luke" heading slowly toward the pit gate. I
was hoping he would get off the track but he didn’t. The caution flew " Oh Crap!! " I thought. Then on
the restart with two to go... I felt the 2nd place car pushing me down the backstretch. I knew this was NOT
GOOD! I pushed up in turn 3 and saw the blue #42 slide by me to the inside. I was on the wrong side of a
perfect pass by Nitro Nick.
2nd place was good ... Its always fun to run up front. Plus... I finished ahead of #23b so that gave me
bragging rights for the week at home. Bill V sr.
From #357 Marc Daniels . 5th place finisher:
Well its not a win, but a top 5 is nothing to hang our heads low about. We.ll get them next week.
Congrats to Nick on a great performance. Time for a water celebration!
Jim Young Photo #3: Regular Slingshot Feature Winner - Week #3 - #42 'Nitro' Nick Pecko!
Great Show by all! Mr. V was on the wrong side of a perfect pass (Mr. V quote)!

Kutztown Speedway 2008
The promotional team of Danny Sammons and Kerry Meitzler will return to the Fairgrounds at Kutztown Speedway in 2008. The duo reached an agreement recently after a successful first season working together at the Kutztown, Pa., fairgrounds oval in '07.
Once again, Sammons and Meitzler will present three-division programs of 600cc Micro-Sprints, 270cc Micro-Sprints and Slingshots through the summer months at the one-fifth-mile clay oval.
A tentative 2008 Opening Day is slated for Wed., May 14.
All racing will be contested on Wednesdays next season, with the exception of the annual Kutztown Fair Races, run on back-to-back nights in August. Dates will be firmed in the coming weeks. "Last year was both a learning experience and a positive one at the same time," said Sammons, reflecting on the '07 season, in which Jason Van Doren (600cc Micro-Sprint), Jeff Hartman (270cc Micro-Sprint) and Shannon Smith (Slingshot) were crowned track champions.
"I was extremely happy with the way the show ran, and - because of that - plan to focus more of my efforts in 2008 on making the show entertaining and enjoyable for the fans." In '07, Sammons and Meitzler drew praise for running quick, efficient shows. Often, the entire program was completed in full by 9:30 p.m., sending fans and racers home early on a work-night. Because of the quick shows last year, there will be a change in the starting times for '08. Warm-ups will be moved back to 6:45 p.m. (from 6:30 p.m.) and racing will start at 7:15 p.m., instead of 7 p.m. This will allow traveling teams some extra time to get to the track.
Special events will also be incorporated into the '08 schedule. Sammons noted that the XCel 600 Modifieds have expressed interest in competing at Kutztown again next season. He would also like to hear from Jr. Micro and Slingshot racers to gauge interest in possible events. For further information on Kutztown's '08 season - or to sponsor an event or division at the family-oriented facility - contact Danny Sammons by phone at: (609) 888-3618 or via e-mail at: danny@aarn.com. Take It Or Leave It.
Subject: tips on saving GAS
TIPS ON PUMPING GAS (Good information)
I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon..
Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline in San Jose, CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.
Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.
A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.
When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.
One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.
Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.
Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.

Hamlin Speedway Banquet
The attention to detail in the planning of this event proved their hard work and dedication over the course of the race season wasn't going to end at the track. Their motto " You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet " seems to fit quite well and shows the determination of making racing at Hamlin Speedway even more enjoyable in the future.
Hamlin Speedways point fund program proved, again this is the place to race. Awards handed out over the course of the ceremony seemed to put a smile on every recipients face as we were greeted by both Denise and Randy Smith. Well planned one of a kind specialty awards were given to drivers in the top 5 points as an addition to their anticipated awards. The top 10 drivers in all the divisions were recognized and awards were presented accordingly.
Jim Young was on hand to capture the moment with his excellent photography skills. DJ Pete Knappenberger provided the entertainment. Special appearances by Mike Feltenberger our division promoter and Ronnie our engine builder made this evening complete.
Excellent job Hamlin Speedway promoters Denise and Randy Smith - Thank You!!

Atlantic City 2008 in Jeopardy
As of last night there are only 5 teams registered. With less than 3 weeks left for the initial deadline the Sammons family may decide to add to the TQ Midget venue and cancel the slingshots if more entries are not received to fill the field by December 1st.
The Sammons family have received overwhelming registrations for the TQ Midgets as of late and are getting more everyday. If you had planned a weekend of racing in 2008 at Atlantic City I suggest you get your paid entries mailed as soon as possible. This may be a major factor in any decisions by the Sammons family for the slingshot division being a part of this venue in the future.

A Heads Up With Tech in the Division
Air pressures should be policed with a non partial witness before every heat and feature event, as it was at Kutztown this past year. Staggar and rear grip are the most important elements in our division to run consistent. Having a durometer on hand to check tire hardness is another good way to keep the field even, reason being there are alot of different softeners and preps out there.
Most teams think that carburetors are where they are getting out performed. Most of the tech inspections performed the carburetors are the first thing checked, therefore nobody seems to tamper with them. Grinding of the intake elbows you are allowed 1/2" into the port. Many teams place blame of deeper grinding to point of purchase. It is the responsibility of the customer to inspect and gauge before purchase. A simple "T" shaped gauge cut to 1/2" on all ends can be used to measure the depth. Same goes with the intake manifold. Polishing of the manifold is a proven disadvantage reason being the fuel and air mixture can not "atomize" and mix properly before entering the combustion chamber or cylinder head.
Shocks are a big issue and without proper inspection other than checking to see if the 1551 or 1551.5 stamp is present teams can get away with tampering with these shocks. The shock needs to be thoroughly inspected to see if the heims have been cut off to re valve the internal components and re welded and painted.
Springs are another major component in grip and chassis transfer. With many companies out there with the ability to produce different weight springs, it seems easy to have someone customize a spring. It wouldn't be hard to purchase a spring rate compressor to have during tech inspections or a micrometer to gauge the thickness of the coils. There are 3 springs that are legal in the division. #60, #80 and #100 all of which must be purchased from Speedway Entertainment. If Speedway Entertainment had the time to check the spring rate of the product they sell due to variation from the factory, it would be checked. Therefore without proper stamping to label springs with "Speedway Entertainment" to insure they were purchased legally this area cannot be policed the way it should.
Rear panard bars are a big issue. There are different size panard bars to adjust rear wheel setups. Some teams go as far as cutting these bars to fit their setups. The first slingshots available came with 12 3/8 " to 14 1/2" bars. 12 3/8" bars are legal, but anything shorter is and will be illegal.
Modifications to a Speedway Entertainment supplied part or engine is deemed illegal. As of late most teams spend countless hours and money going to dynometers to measure horsepower as well as to tune to gain more, to keep up with " the faster teams". As far as I am concerned the bar has been raised with the monetary expenses due to teams feeling the need to spend money to win races. Technically this division was created to keep the costs down and make it affordable for teams to have fun and race as well as to showcase driving and set up ability. It doesn't take a genius to figure out if you grind the rocker arms down you will gain an advantage, therefore this is a modification and should not be allowed.
Shimming of valve springs also creates an advantage to help alleviate "floating" therefore you can run gearing that the teams that aren't mechanically inclined or cant afford to risk coil bind and blowing a motor cannot, to help get the car off the corners. Everybody is in it to win it so to speak but it seems as with all of racing the more money you seem to spend the better chance of victory.
Frequent fuel tests should be a major part of tech inspections. There are many teams that feel the need to use top end lubes as well as the so called "fuel fragrance" to gain an advantage. A simple water test can prove whether or not a substance was used. Most top end lubes leave a residue in the tank for weeks after the substance is supposedly burned off. Therefore at any given time the fuel test can detect an illegal substance whether it has been used the night of the inspection or weeks prior.
Modifying the front axles by cutting off the ends and re positioning to create caster is illegal. A simple inspection as well as a protractor device can and should be used to detect such modifications. Grant it some contact damage may change the caster but in most circumstances it will be on one single end of the axle.
It is the driver and teams responsibility to scale their car every week before the main venues at any given track to insure themselves the car(s) make weight. All tracks scales are different and vary from class to class due to excessive use by other divisions as well as conditions of the track surface ( muddy ) and surrounding areas of the scales. Most tracks allow a car to be weighed a maximum of 3 times if legal weight isn't presently achieved.
Air pressure relief valves on valve stems to release air build up should be illegal. In most circumstances this is a huge advantage that is available if you have the knowledge they are available.
The use of "tornadoes" or other air flow improving products in the air filters are another huge advantage and are illegal. But in past conversations with some teams they have been used. This would be a costly mistake. These devices are expensive and can be seized, as well as can change the air fuel mixture therefore hindering engine performance or causing engine failure or head gasket problems.
Engine boring to gain horsepower has become a big issue in the slingshot division, and is a huge advantage. Some teams cannot afford to have their engines bored, therefore they are at an disadvantage. I personally feel the weight limit should be adjusted to accommodate this advantage. Easily being policed by engine seal numbers showing bore and/or tagged or color coded heads. The existing motors in competition can be easily policed pre race and recorded by removing the valley plate and looking for the stamp.
As of now there will be roving "authorized tech officials" traveling from track to track weekly next year. Tech will performed in an excessive manner. Any and all modifications in question will result in the surrendering of part(s), loss of points accumulated as well as all money earned. Engine seizures will play a big role in the division next year. If you are asked to supply an engine in question keep in mind it does NOT mean you are being accused of cheating. You have to look at this as a way of proving to other competitors that you are indeed legal.
There should be in NO way an excuse for an illegal part on your car. It is the responsibility of the driver, and car owner to inspect their parts as well as newly purchased "used " cars for illegal modifications and/or parts. If a modification or part is questionable it is YOUR responsibility to contact an authorized tech official or Speedway Entertainment representative for advice before the car is registered for competition.
This article was not meant to accuse individuals by any means of cheating or deliberately making modifications to gain an advantage. It is meant to let the teams know that in the upcoming race season the roving tech officials will be inspecting in an excess of just weights and tires. Keep in mind Speedway Entertainment keeps engine records and seal numbers of ALL engines with the dates of last service. Therefore if engines have not been serviced for years and are still being used weekly the engine most likely will be requested after the venue. This division was created for showcasing driving skills. Grey areas are being addressed and will be appropriately handled by stating in future rulebooks to keep everyone on an even playing field.

Friday night racing resumed for the North South Showdown on the red clay 1/3 mile oval and it was ALL Shannon Smith proving Thursdays practice speeds were no fluke taking the checkered flag in the Feature event and collecting $200.00 for her efforts as well as another piece of hardware to add to her collection.

A Tribute to Roy Smith
Life: May 16, 1919 - October 11, 2007
Roy was born and raised in eastern PA and lived his whole life in Kunkletown. He was the son of Asher and Bertha Kuehner Smith. Roy was a pioneer in dirt and asphalt racing at many tracks including Dorney Park, Hatfield, Old Bridge, Saratoga, Nazareth, Middletown, NY, Evergreen, Reading, and Langhorne.
He won many championships with the famous #555 with Freddy Adams, Warren Mutter, and Marty Acker, and won many races with George Sleight, Billy Tanzosh, Bobby Bottcher, Larry Voss, Freddy Fehr, and Johnny Caprill. He also helped build cars for two of his sons – Richie who piloted the famous “Triple Nickel” and Randy in the “Double Nickel”. He also helped his grandson Joel in the “Triple Nickel”.
The Pop Smith racing legacy continues with grandsons and granddaughter, Ryan, Brett, and Shannon – the 2007 Kutztown slingshot champion.
88 years of pure sweetness, a great man, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, has “Gone Home”. But every Green & Checkered flag waived from here to Eternity will be watched and smiled upon by Pop Smith!
Roy is survived by his wife of 65 years Evelyn and their six children, spouses, 21 grand children, and 21 great grand children.
Roy will be deeply missed and may he race in peace!
